10 Powerful Bible Verses About The Fear Of Failure When You’re Too Scared To Pursue Your Dreams
10 Powerful Bible Verses About The Fear Of Failure When You’re Too Scared To Pursue Your Dreams
If you’ve spent any amount of time around these parts, then you know I’ve talked about the fear of failure about a million times (give or take a few)…Fear is my Achilles heel but God has been faithful to help me overcome that in so many ways…but let’s get it straight.
Fear is still a major struggle of mine.
God can give you beautiful dreams and amazing goals to pursue,, but the fear of failure will try to cripple you and stop you from pursuing those dreams like it has for me so many times.
The sad part is, as Christian entrepreneurs and writers, God has given us all we need to overcome fear, yet we somehow allow the thought of failure to turn to fear and negatively impact our chances of achieving our dreams.
The truth is, when you are called out to achieve big things in life, like starting a business, the fear of failure always hangs around to see how it can stop you from pursuing your dreams.
But with our faith in Christ and the words of hope he has given us in many bible verses about fear,, we have all it takes to overcome fear and achieve our dreams.
Let me show you how I’ve been able to slowly overcome the fear of failure through faith.
Understanding the Fear of Failure
So what can we say about fearing failure? How do we define it? To me, the fear of failure is when we are so paralyzed by the idea that we won’t be good at something, that we just never attempt the thing in the first place.
There’s even a scientific definition of fearing failure.
And you know what the funny thing is? Never attempting is the same as failing.
At least me in my book. So the thing that we are fearing has come true by default. Funny isn’t it?
And what’s even more ironic is that sometimes what we deem to be failures are only learning curves that potentially push us on the best path to pursuing our dreams.
And wait for it..it gets even “funnier” because your version of failure might be someone else version of success.
For instance, I’ve seen in a Facebook group where a blogger was upset that she was only making $3,000 a month from her blog.
The majority of bloggers don’t even make $1 from their blogs. But her version of failure was $3,000. Failure is truly subjective.
Fear of failure is a unique emotion, isn’t it?
It has a certain way of affecting you emotionally and psychologically.
One thing to know as a Christian is that the word of God says multiple times that we should fear not, and the fear of failure is not exempted.
So what causes us to fear failure even though the Lord clearly says we shouldn’t fear?
Some of the things that contribute to the fear of failure include our desires for perfectionism, social comparison, past experiences, and lots more.
Sometimes in our bid to be perfectionists, we set high standards and develop fears that anything less than these standards will ultimately make us feel like a failure.
And these fears gain ground in our hearts, preventing us from taking the necessary steps to move forward.
Also, the competitive nature of our society often leads to comparison to others who we perceive to be successful.
This comparison can magnify the fear of failure as anything short of the achievement of the person you are comparing yourself to will ultimately bring a sense of inadequacy and inferiority.
Overcoming Fear Through Faith
Here is the good news, overcoming fear is not difficult in any way…if we don’t make it difficult. Aww, yes, that’s where the hard part comes in. It depends on us to a certain extent!
The opposite of fear is faith, and that is all we need to overcome fear. The Bible encourages us in Deuteronomy 31:6 not to be afraid, the Lord our God is with us, so we should not fear.
But I know through vast experience that choosing not to be afraid is harder than it seems. Trust me, I do not take any of your fears lightly.
If God has said we should not fear, then he has a way out for us in every situation, which gives us the courage to go about doing what we ought to do.
Faith is the only thing that can help us overcome our fears, without faith, it is impossible to please God.
It takes faith to have a perfect walk with God as it is the fuel of our relationship with God.
When you have God in your camp and your faith is intact, you have the courage to push through anything and achieve that purpose and beautiful dream God has revealed to you.
Trusting in God’s Plan
As Christians, the place of trusting God and his plans for our lives is non-negotiable.
When you have a plan for your life and the storms of life and uncertainty arise, it would be difficult to stand firm and trust such plans.
You would most likely look for an easier way out and probably compromise on some of your plans.
God is an amazing Father and as his children, he holds us up with righteous right hand. And because if that we know we can trust Him.
The Bible says in Jeremiah 29:11, that he has good plans for us to give us a hope and a future.
That means if the plan is from God, we can trust it and be confident no matter the trouble and uncertainty that arises.
Tips To Embrace Courage and Perseverance In Your Everyday Life
Although bible verses about the fear of failure may not expressly tell you to embrace courage and perseverance, these are two key elements to accept if you want to overcome the fear.
There is no set-in-stone way to do this though. Being brave doesn’t usually happen overnight but instead it grows like a muscle you build in the gym.
Here are a few exercises you can use in your spiritual gym to build courage and perseverance.
Let’s go over them together:
Prayer and meditation, start every day with God, ask for his guidance and help to be courageous and persevere no matter the situation.
Identify your fears, write them down, and use your faith in the form of positive confession to tackle them.
Leverage God’s word by memorizing scriptures and using them to replace negative thoughts.
Practice gratitude in such a way that you have a shift in perspective. When you acknowledge God and count your blessings your fears disappear, and you have the courage to press on and achieve bigger dreams successfully.
Finding Strength in Scripture To Overcome The Fear Of Failure
God cares for us, and as such he always wants his children to live life without any kind of fear no matter what comes our way.
He has given us the scriptures to find strength when we are weak, to find solace when we are down.
The Bible in Psalms says the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness of it, the world and they who dwell in it.
If the world and we who dwell in it belong to God, then we have nothing to worry about.
If we can read the scriptures and affirm his promises to us, we will find strength when we are weak and the right guidance when there seems to be no way.
Now I want to share with you some of the scriptures you can go to when you feel afraid of following the plans God has for your life
Bible Verses about Conquering Fear of Failure
2 Timothy 1:17 Not Fear, But Power
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
God has given us power, love, and a sound mind, to help us achieve our dreams, but fear on the other hand tries to draw us back.
Yes, sometimes you can get scared, we all do, but your dream shouldn’t end there, with these tools God has given us, you can do exploit.
Psalm 73:26 Know where your strength lies.
My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
When you rely on your strength to get you through life, the fear of failure can easily get a grip on you. It is important to acknowledge God as the source of your strength, that way you can go through life with ease even when faced with difficulty.
Philippians 4:6 Prayer and thanksgiving do the trick.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God.
You can’t stop worrying by simply telling yourself not to worry. The best way to tackle the fear and get rid of your worries is to leverage prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving.
Be open to God, let him know exactly how you feel, ask for him to help you, and thank him for his faithfulness in the past and in hope for the future.
Philippians 4:13 There’s nothing you can’t do.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Do you feel exhausted from trying too many times? Try again. With the help of Christ, you can do anything.
You CAN do ALL things, not some things but ALL things, know this truth and know peace.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust In the Lord
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him. And he shall direct your paths.
When we rely on logic and try to make sense of everything, we end up justifying our fear of failure.
One thing we need to realize is that our logic and God’s logic are not the same. To get the best of this life we need to trust in the lord and not what we think is logical.
Jeremiah 29:11- A hope and A future
For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Always have it in the palm of your hands and in your thoughts that God’s plans for you are good.
The sooner we realize that the more courageous we become to drive out the fear of failure.
Even when things don’t seem to go right, remember the plans God has for you are good to give you a hope and a future.
Isaiah 41:10 God is with you.
Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes. I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
One sad part about fear is that it comes with an eerie feeling of loneliness. When your dreams feel too big, and fear begins to overwhelm you, you begin to realize that you are lonely.
But the truth is we are not alone. This is one of my favorite bible verses about the fear of failure. Because I live in the consciousness of God’s presence with me. And when fear tries to taunt me, the still voice of God reminds me that I am not alone, and I don’t have to do it all alone. He is there with me.
Proverbs 29:25 don’t please men, only trust God.
The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.
It’s fair to say most times, our fear of failure is birthed in our desires to please people. Sometimes you are scared you might not measure up and you would rather not attempt to pursue your dreams at all.
Proverbs tells us that the fear of man is a snare, a barrier that limits you from making progress. But once you trust in the lord and engage with him in your boat, he will show up and make you successful.
Philippians 1:6 It’s not over yet.
Being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.
God is not done with you, he has a purpose for creating you, and he deposited that big dream in you. He wants you to pursue it with courage and without fear.
He started a good work in you and he’s faithful to complete it. Don’t allow fear to creep in and destroy the good work the lord has started in you, he’s with you every step of the way.
Proverbs 24:16 You will rise again.
For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity.
View failure as stepping stones to your God-ordained future. Never give up. When it seems like you’ve given your all and you can’t go again, rise again.
When it looks like failure is looming, rise again. God has promised that no matter how much you fall, he will help you rise again.
Personal Reflections and Applications
As I’ve mentioned before, being afraid of failure has been a major spiritual roadblock for me.
I talked about in this post how I was too afraid to even start this blog and my other blog, Healthy As You Can, because of fear.
And it wasn’t just fear of failure. It was fear of trying something new. Fear of being successful and having a whole new level of pressure and responsibility on my shoulders.
Anything that was possible to be afraid of, I was afraid of it. It was ridiculous but it’s true.
And I know that it was the devil that was putting doubts in my head so that I wouldn’t use any of my God-given talents for God’s glory.
So if you are struggling to start a blog or a business or write that book because you are scared, just start.
Don’t wait until it’s perfect. Especially if you are trying to be a blogger. The beautiful thing about blog posts is that they can be updated and rewritten.
You will learn and grow as your journey progresses and it will be worth it, I promise.
