3 Subtle Signs God Is Calling You To Be A Writer Or Blogger (That You Shouldn’t Ignore)

How To Know If Writing Or Blogging Is Your Calling

In today’s post, I want to go over some of the signs you might be ignoring that God is calling you to start writing or blogging.
I did this for many years and I don’t want you to miss the blessings (and struggles, let’s be real) that come with blogging.
The parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30 struck fear in my heart for 3 years.
Or maybe it was guilt.
Probably a combination of both.

Regardless of which toxic emotion I felt, it wouldn’t go away until I finally started doing what I was supposed to do.

You see, God wanted me to start using my talents as a writer for His glory.

It’s crazy to me now but I was terrified of writing in public for all the world to see. I didn’t want to put myself out there so I buried my talents.

(Update: Wow, ya’ll I’m going back and reading this in 2021 and I had totally forgotten just how scared I was to be a blogger/writer…now that feeling is so foreign to me that I can’t believe I ever felt that way.

So if you’re feeling like that right now, give it a few years…you’ll probably look back and say “What was I so afraid of?”)

I know this parable is literally talking about talents in a monetary sense but I believe it is also metaphorically referring to the God-given talents that He gave us to help others and serve Him.

For fear of being vulnerable, I decided to ignore God’s call to be a writer and a blogger.

I’m guessing that if you’re still reading this, you have a sneaking suspicion that God wants you to be a writer too but you aren’t sure and you’re scared to step out in faith.

My book True Transformation (click to learn more) can help you with the stepping out in faith part.

This article is going to help you with the knowing if you are being called part.

– How To Know If The Lord Is Calling You To Be A Blogger or Writer

1) You Have Talent As A Writer But Pushed It Aside To Work A “Real Job”.

One way to know if God is calling you to be a blogger (or a writer/author) is simply by knowing whether or not you have writing talent.

If you have writing talent then it's guaranteed that God wants you to use it in some way to help His people.

Have you ever been told you have a flair for writing? Have you ever won any contests for writing? Has someone ever told you, you should write your life story?

Has a teacher ever singled you out as being talented in that area or said you have a way with words?

Do you just simply love writing and find joy in it? Then you can definitely use that talent for the Lord.

2) God Prompts You Constantly Whenever You Read Or Hear About Blogging Or Writing.

Maybe you’ve been like me.

Maybe you’ve been feeling guilty that you haven’t used your writing talents as much as you should be.

Maybe the Holy Spirit has been guiding you toward it but you keep resisting.

How will I fit it all in? How can I care for my family, hold down a job and start a blog too? I hear you.

It’s a lot to do but lots of people do and I believe you can too.

If your ears perk up when you hear something about writing and blogging, He might be calling you.

If your heart leaps in your chest when you see something about becoming a writer, He might be calling you.

If you find that writing is on your mind all the time, He might be calling.

If you’re reading the Word and verses constantly take your mind back to writing, He might be calling you.

I can’t know for sure if He wants you to blog but these are signs to watch for if you’re confused about what to do.

3) Starting A Blogging Or Writing Career Feels “Risky”.

One thing that we can’t say about God is that He likes his people to play things safe. “Abraham sacrifice your son for me”. ” David go fight this giant”.

God asks us to step out of our comfort zone all the time.

Honestly, now that I think about it, if He’s asking us to start a blog, write a book or be a freelance writer we are getting off kinda easy.

Starting a blog is a “risk” in the sense that it’s an adventure that could lead you to new places and have you meet new people.

It’s challenging in the sense that there’s so much to learn and so much to do. I mean I won’t lie. Blogging and writing is a lot of hard work. And when you blog you do position yourself as a leader in whatever topic you write about and that always comes with risks.

However, it’s not as hard to do as fighting a giant or leaving all that you know and going to a new country to be a missionary.

Of course, trusting God is a risk in the traditional sense. The risk is not being sure if this is what God really wants but taking the leap of faith anyway.
